2025.02: New Year, New Meta

Here were a few of our favorites from Stratechery Plus this week.

  1. Meta’s Moderation Changes. As you may have heard, what might have been a sleepy week after the holidays was interrupted by an Instagram video from Mark Zuckerberg and a host of moderation changes announced by Meta. Moderation questions on social media have been generating politically charged arguments for at least eight years, and the announcements from Zuckerberg were no exception. In the midst of those reactions, though, Ben’s Daily Update on Wednesday traces past comments from Zuckerberg to explain why, in addition to obvious political considerations, Mark Zuckerbeg may now be coming up with different answers to these questions. Ben also shares lessons that he, himself, has learned after covering these issues for the past eight years. It was cogent, thoughtful, and clear-eyed analysis; a refreshing counterpoint to several days of people yelling about all this on social media. — Andrew Sharp

  2. So What’s Anduril Up To? Understanding the future of national security and the defense industry means getting acquainted with Anduril. Ben and I talked a bit about Anduril on a Sharp Tech episode before the holidays, and the short story is that Anduril is working to modernize the military through vertically integrated weapons platforms, while also developing software that can work across platforms and make it much easier to build and maintain modern warfighting capacity. For the longer story about what Anduril’s doing, the challenge of competing for contracts, why their work is important, and how the company views its role alongside Palantir, check out Ben’s interview with Co-CEO Brian Schimpf. The podcast version of this interview is a great way to spend an hour over the weekend. — AS

  3. And now, a look at the top of the NBA. As 2025 begins the Celtics and Thunder are the favorites to meet in the NBA Finals, which is why the whole league paid attention to their regular season matchup last weekend in Oklahoma City. I had a great time talking through the midseason showdown with Ben Golliver of the Washington Post, and later in the episode we broke down both sides of the Jimmy Butler soap opera in Miami, and a few questions about the psychedelic possibilities for the rest of Victor Wembanyama’s career after he played Nikola Jokic to a draw in a pair of Spurs-Nuggets games last week. Check it out below. — AS
